Cascade Sun Works, Inc.  Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 2005

Cascade Sun Works, Inc. of  Portland announces the completion of a six kilowatt solar photovoltaic grid-tie system for the Montessori School of Beaverton.  The system was partially funded with the help of the Energy Trust of Oregon, Inc.  Data can be fed right into the classrooms as well as a child-scale high touch "learning wall" shows real time data on the energy production of the system.

According to system designer Cliff Schrock, Cascade Sun Works of Portland, the system will generate nearly 7,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually, about half the electricity used by an average Oregon home in a year. The system is net-metered to the Portland General Electric power grid, meaning that power generated but not consumed at the school will flow to the grid for use by other utility customers, with the school receiving a credit for that power on their bill. “We expect power from the system to be returned to the grid during the summer, and maybe even on bright days during the school year,” said Schrock.

As part of the program to integrate solar energy into the curriculum, Schrock is holding special sessions with each classroom, providing age-appropriate materials and other tools to help the children understand the power that is being captured through the new system. “It’s amazing how much the children are able to pull together some of these topics they’ve been hearing and learning about,” said Schrock.
