RELEASE Bend, Oregon - November 15, 2002 - urbansun announces installation of new solar hot water system provided by Cascade Sun Works. The system is part of an integrated solar home design that is available for viewing by appointment in Bend. Kathryn Gray, chief home designer at urbansun said “we were really excited to be able to add the solar domestic hot water system to our passive solar home. Now we have the sun working even harder to provide the bulk of our heating needs. Solar hot water is so easy to cost justify based on low cost per month of the equipment and the ongoing reduction in energy usage.” The one-year old 2200 square foot Craftsman-style home employs a sweeping bank of south-facing French doors to collect enough solar energy to provide about 60% of the homes space heating requirements—and capture the stunning views. Thermal storage and other cost-effective passive solar techniques combine to maintain comfortable, even, year-round temperatures. Ongoing improvements in construction techniques and products continue to reduce the amount of energy and other resources required to live in a warm, comfortable home. The home is open by appointment for persons interested in passive solar design and construction. John McIntosh at Cascade Sun Works said “we were absolutely delighted to be asked to provide a domestic hot water system for urbansun. During construction, Kathryn had her plumber provide a solar pre-plumb in the home. The solar pre-plumb involved running two ¾” copper pipes from in the attic down to the hot water heater closet. All we had to do was place the solar collector on the roof and put our integrated solar storage tank and controls in the closet. The only real challenge was getting the 4’x 10’ collector on top of a two story 8/12 pitch roof in the rain and wind.” Cascade Sun Works is committed to working with architects, home designers and contractors to provide solar hot water and electrical systems that help make homes warm, efficient, and livable.
