Cascade Sun Works developed this unique method of heating for Pence Place Solar Town Homes combining Solar Hot Water Heating with a Tankless Hot Water Heater  and a Lifebreath Clean Air Furnace/HRV.  The benefits are 45%-65% reduction in ongoing heating costs (depending on the units) along with the comfort of  fresh air circulation at a reasonable cost.  Solar Domestic Hot Water  is also supplied by this system.

Cascade Sun Works built the closed-loop system as well as the equipment for integration into the heating system.  The solar system uses the high performance Heliodyne Gobi collectors and Helio-Pak heat transfer equipment in a closed-loop design that is safe and efficient year round in all areas including cold climates

Tangible benefits that the Energy Trust saw were:
• Packaging of renewable and energy efficiency incentives for new home marketing.
• Testing a new technology integrating renewable and energy efficiency measures.
• Outreach to architects and contractors to encourage integration of measures in new construction.
• Long-term homeowner savings resulting from minimum up-front Energy Trust incentives to the builder.
• A case study to help promote the New Home Energy Savings program when it is launched.
• Leveraging the Trade Ally network to bring forward projects crossing multiple programs.

Promoting this project will enhance the development of the Energy Trust New Home Energy Savings program while piloting the implementation of both renewable and efficiency program measures at a single project site.

The attractive low profile Gobi collectors (shown above mounted on the roofs) with bronze anodized aluminum frames and an anti-glare solar glass cover are installed on a southerly facing roof.  Plumbing runs through a chase from the attic to the mechanical area in the garage.

The Helio-Pak 16 brings proven non-freezing technology to Central Oregon with a modular assembly minimizes the number of components, promotes easy installation and maintenance as well as increasing system efficiency.  The HP-16 collects solar radiation for both domestic hot water and space heating.

With high thermal efficiency, Takagi systems use much less fuel than traditional systems.   Since the T-K2 water heater has neither a storage tank to keep heated all day, nor a pilot light, it burns gas only when you need hot water. This eliminates standby heat loss, which can be as high as 3-4% every hour for storage tank type water heaters.  The T-K2 doesn't store hot water. It generates hot water on demand - saving time, money and space.

The Lifebreath Clean Air Furnace uses the solar system and Takagi water heater as its heat source. This efficient system creates a healthier, more comfortable home environment while lowering energy bills.

The Lifebreath Clean Air Furnace brings outdoor air through the built-in HRV, ensuring fresh, healthy heating of your home - all for the cost of a high efficiency furnace.

The Lifebreath Clean Air Furnace is ready for the addition of air conditioning.

This system qualified for the Energy Trust of Oregon Incentive Program as well as State of Oregon Solar Hot Water Tax Credit.
